Our recent trip to Gibraltar took us to one of the most breathtaking spots on the peninsula: Europa Point Lighthouse.

Getting There
The journey to Europa Point is part of the adventure. We started from the bustling streets of Gibraltar, taking a scenic bus ride that offered stunning views of the Rock and surrounding waters. The No. 5 bus runs regularly from the city center, making it convenient to reach our destination. It costs just £2 for a round trip—a small price for such spectacular views.
A Lighthouse with History
Built in 1841, the lighthouse stands 49 meters tall and is a vital guide for ships navigating the busy waters of the Strait of Gibraltar. As we approached, the fresh sea breeze and the sound of waves crashing against the rocks set the stage for our exploration. The lighthouse itself is not open for climbing, but the surrounding area is rich with walking paths and lookout points that allow for great photo opportunities.

While at Europa Point, we also visited the nearby Ibrahim-al-Ibrahim Mosque, a stunning architectural piece that adds to the rich tapestry of cultures in Gibraltar. The surrounding gardens provided a lovely spot to relax and take in the breathtaking views of the coastline.

Europa Point is open year-round, and there are no entrance fees, making it a budget-friendly destination. However, the lighthouse itself is not open to the public, so planning to explore the grounds is essential.

After our adventures, we were ready to indulge in some local cuisine. We headed to a charming café near the point, where we tried traditional dishes that reflect Gibraltar’s unique blend of cultures. One standout was the fish and chips, freshly prepared and priced around £9. The fish was crispy and flaky, perfectly complemented by a side of mushy peas.
We also sampled calentita, a local chickpea flour dish, served with a zesty garlic sauce. This tasty treat costs about £5 and is a must-try for anyone visiting. For dessert, we couldn’t resist the Gibraltarian almond cake, a sweet delight that goes for £3. It’s rich, moist, and provides a perfect end to our meal.
